The slogan is best known in English-language media for its use within the context of Iran. In September 2022 protesters in Iran and abroad adopted the slogan after Jina Mahsa Amini died while in custody for “improper” attire. The death of Amini, a 22-year-old Sunni woman from Iran’s minority Kurdish community, was a reflection of the escalating and unrelenting authoritarianism of the Iranian regime at a time of deepening economic instability.

No country for female musicians

The Iranian government is coming under increasing pressure to ban women musicians from performing in public or releasing albums.

According to some conservative clerics and hardline MPs, singing is forbidden ("haram") for women in Islam, and in their eyes the current, ''moderate'' administration has broken the taboo.

In recent months, music and musicians have been heavily criticized by conservative members of the clergy. Meanwhile, several concerts approved by the ministry of culture have been cancelled at the last minute by local clergy members or other officials, despite efforts from the culture ministry to stand by its permits.

On Wednesday morning, 01 October, 2014,Kazemeyni Boroujerdi, a Political Prisoner at Evin Prison (Iran) has been transferred to an unknown location and no information is available about his condition yet. He advocates the separation of religion and government and has been imprisoned several times by the Iranian government.

He reportedly first expressed his opposition to the theocratic nature of the Islamic government of Iran under which Islamic jurists rule or provide "guardianship" in 1994. He has been quoted as saying Iranians "are loyal to the fundamentals of the true religion and the Prophet's mission", but are "tired of the religion of politics and political slogans."

Boroujerdi and many of his followers were arrested in Tehran on October 8, 2006, following a clash between police and hundreds of his followers. Iranian officials charged him with having claimed to be a representative of Muhammad al-Mahdi, a venerated figure in Shi'i Islam, a charge he denies.
